A high tide is defined as a tide where the coefficient (i.e. the amplitude of the tide) is equal to or greater than 100 and in Saint-Malo, the tidal range (i.e. the difference between high and low tides) is often exceptional and can reach 13 metres. This ranks the city among the sites with the highest tides in Europe!
The high tides in Saint-Malo are a real spectacle. At high tide, it is enough for the sea to be a little rough for the waves to confront the city walls. At low tide, fishermen on foot enjoy themselves and collect shellfish from the coast. In all circumstances, extreme caution is recommended.
