The GR34: a hiking trail steeped in history
The GR34 is a path that has crossed the history of the Breton coastline. Today, it is the favourite hiking trail of the French. It was created in 1791 to facilitate the patrols of the customs officers along the coastline. Hence its name of "Sentier des douaniers".
The customs officers were responsible for preventing smuggling activities. They patrolled the path by night and day, rain or shine, to monitor trafficking and looting of wrecks. Some remnants of their passage are still visible. If you are brave, walk to Primel Point. Nestled on a rocky point, an old customs hut built under Napoleon I still guards the path.
Abandoned at the beginning of the 20th century, the path was reborn thanks to a few enthusiasts who transformed it into a hiking trail in 1968. Today, thousands of hikers walk it every year, from Mont-Saint-Michel to Saint-Nazaire!
Domaine de la Ville Huchet : start your tour in Brittany
The Domaine de la Ville Huchet is a starred campsite, located in the Quelmer district of Saint-Malo. Close to the sea, the city walls and along the GR34, it is an ideal starting point for an adventure on the GR34.
Start with a leisurely warm-up in the direction of Dinard. For a truly marine experience, take the sea bus that connects the two port cities.
Then continue your journey along the way. Saint-Briac, Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer, Saint-Cast-le-Guildo... As many names with typical sounds as unique landscapes. Rocky points, wild coasts and isolated creeks follow one another at each stage. Walking the GR34, it is the promise to admire a different postcard every day.
